Session 1 - The Arena & Zombie Trouble
from admin on 06/10/2019 07:42 PMGM notes for the session, what was said to the party once King Teraknian and his trusted lieutenants had rescued the players from the Arena.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The arena fight was a spectacular success, with not a single miss from anyone. Lilith managed to acrobatically leap up a 10' high column and then leap down and kill a kobald. Pandjed managed to engage a flying kobald in an existential conversation, and to reinforce the weight of his arguements, Quinn killed the kobald with an arrow or two... much to the fury of the Paladin who immediately filled in a grievance form.
Two following orcs were mown down by ranged attacks before they really even got close, with the arena crowd cheering for some new favourites! That was until the manticore came stomping out and Amity Fenwick's plot to kill Woden with a huge bet against him became clear.
GM Notes for this part :
At this point, as the crowd will gasp and fall silent, before backing away in a panic... Woden will look at the Players in confusion, then he will turn and see a Manticore, as it roars and stomps its way out into the arena. Woden's face will drop, and he will shout up at one of the crowd in the stands "Amity! What is this, you told me..."
"You told me that you were invincible last night, Woden... come now, do not disappoint everyone here who has bet on you once again! My money... lies elsewhere!" (this is Amity Fenwick who runs the Military section of the city).
At this point, a huge lightning bolt will fly from the left of the arena and burn a hole clean through the chimera, which drops like a stone. A figure will shout across "Amity Fenwick... this goes too far! Your spectacles always disgust me, but now you throw captives, unknowing slaves into your games? Enough! I will not tolerate this in my city any more!"
Many of the crowd will be heard exclaiming "The king! Teraknian is here!"
The Players will see a young man dressed in Ranger gear, flanked by several very powerful looking figures, one of which is undoubtedly the warlock that threw the lightning bolt that killed the Chimera.
Amity will reply "But... them? I was told they were... I will have Aslief's head for this! My King, this is just a misunderstanding, I did not know they were..."
At this point, the fireballs and lightning and missiles start to fly between the two sides of the arena as some over enthusiastic henchmen let loose. The figure in the hooded white cloak will appear next to the party and escort them to the Temple of Tyr at W3.

Temple of Tyr, Noble's District.
The party has been brought from the arena by the Cleric Kaylein Tarquin, one of King Teraknian's advisors, to Tyr's temple. The party will be treated well and with respect by the priests, and after a couple of minutes of rest, the king himself will return.
"Please, forgive what has happened to you in my City. There will be consequences for those responsible, I promise you... but for the moment, Kaylein tells me that your minds have been clouded with magic. With your permission, I would have him restore those memories for you, so you can piece together how you came to be here?"
Assuming the party agrees, Kaylein will stand in the middle of them and cast a very powerful Dispel magic spell, which brings those memories flooding back.
Each player was captured from wherever they were by slavers, led in chains through a long march... brought to a mind flayer, where they had their memories ripped from them, then sold at auction as gladiator slaves, loaded on to a boat that set sail to Malvarin. (players can roll a d100 to see how much they were worth!) Of course, Pandjed rolled highest, being sold for 95gps! Quinn went for 78, Lilith for 75 with only Isaac being outraged for fetching a measly 34gps.
The journey was terrible, with the players being made to row, half starved, lashed and in manacles. It was on that journey that you formed the bond between your other players, vowing to seek out those responsible for putting you in that boat and for your mistreatment. You only remember the Captain's name and the name of the ship... Captain Doombeard of the Fortune Star.
As small part of recompense, King Teraknian will grant the party possessions equal to normal startup from PHB plus 1 healing potion each. Once they are done shopping, Kaylein will tell the party that the King wants this slave trade ending, in particular the route that brought them into his city. They should start at the Sun and Sand inn, in the Thieves / smugglers docks area. He gives them a letter to give to the Tavern owner Gnarley Alestorm (if they read it, it will promise an exemption from searches by the town guard for a year if he directs the party to the boat that they came in on). Kaylein will also offer them the loan of one of the temple's artefacts to help right this terrible wrong. The Mortar and Pestle of Grumio the Healer. (10gps per hp gem dust)
If they can bring the Captain Doombeard to justice, The king will offer them employ as Town Guards at the southern gate, 1 week on guard duty, 1 week to pursue other adventures of their own or work for the city.
Gnarley will take the letter, but ask the party for a favour first before he will tell them where Doombeard's little lair is. Rescue his missus! She is trapped in the basement with some zombies... we let...erm... a few pirates hide down there from the town guard, and when Sally went down there last night... half of them was dead and eaten, and the other half were zombies! Now shes trapped in one of the rooms... anything you find down there, you can keep, just get my Sally back... or she will kill me!
There was mention of the cause of the zombiefication in the basement, with Gnarley letting slip he thought it might have been Sally's stew. A vigorous debate on immigrants, economic migrants and the status of Gnarley Alestorm as Criminal or Folk hero ensued.
The basement is still mid fight, but Pandjed got decked by a vicious zombie resembling the remains of Frankie Brunei, a famous gladiator from decades ago needing a heroic diving heal from Isaac to avoid death.
